Mozart’s early ’opera buffa’ was written in 1768 when he was 12, but it was not performed until May in the following year. It is a setting of a libretto by Goldoni in a revised version by Marco Coltellini, which, like the majority of ’opere buffe’ of the period, deals with the battle of the sexes. It is full of melodic invention and colourful period orchestration, while the lively finales anticipate those of Mozart’s later operas.
